Great Podcast with a lot of good suggestions. Just a quick note on your suggestion to fly through different “unconnected” airlines, it does come with a little bit of risk. If your first flight is delayed or cancelled, your next flight isn’t always accommodating if it’s a different airline (especially if it’s within 24 hours notice).
My wife and I traveled round trip from Seattle to Florida and back for our honeymoon. Our parents paid for that portion, but we lived in Edmonton, AB at the time, so we had an “unconnected” flight back to Edmonton from Seattle. Our flight from Florida was delayed to Texas which bumped our connecting flight from Texas to Seattle ahead 12 hours. Suffice it to say we were going to miss our flight from Seattle to Edmonton. We called and pretty much begged to be transferred to the next flight leaving Seattle. They were kind enough not to have us pay for the whole flight again, but we still had to be charged for taxes for both flights which came to about an extra $100. They basically said to have your entire trip connected because they don’t usually accommodate for unconnected flights being delayed.
